Rock Bands Essay examples -- Music, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones
Along with the Beatles, The Rolling Stones are one of the most famous English rock bands to influence America. Introducing teenagers to African American urban blues, and transforming the urban blues into something like high-energized rock and roll are just some of the things the Stones brought to America (Kallen 10-11). The original line-up of the band included; Bill Wyman, Charlie Watts, Brian Jones, Mick Jagger, and Ian Stewart (Kallen 8-9). They have come a long way to get where they are now, and to this day they are still playing their music around the world. The Rolling Stones are an English rock band, they have been around since the early 1960ââ¬â¢s. The band was brought together by Keith Richards and Mick Jagger. Richards and Jagger were friends all throughout their boyhood until their families ended up moving away from each other. After that they went their separate ways until 1960 when they met up with each other at a train station in England. A month after their renewal they started up the band (Kallen17). During the time Richards and Jagger were getting their band started Brian Jones was working his way up the music chain. He sat in to play with a band named Blues Incorporated, they played together often in a Jazz Club in London (Kallen17). Eventually Jones decided he was ready to start his own band and he put out an ad in newspaper that he was looking for band mates (Kallen18). Ian Stewart was the first to respond to his ad, shortly after Richards and Jagger showed up to the auditions. That was the official start of t he band. They still went on playing gigs without an official name, until they finally decided to name themselves ââ¬Å"Rollinââ¬â¢ Stonesâ⬠after a Muddy Waterââ¬â¢s song. Muddy Waterââ¬â¢s was where The Stones ... ...he was just a temporary replacement. But finally Wood just became a member of The Rolling Stones. He fit perfectly into the band. His roots, and origins were the same as theirs and not to mention he looked mirror image to Keith Richards. His first full album that he contributed to was ââ¬Å"Black and Blueâ⬠which was released in 1976 (The Rolling Stones Biography). Ronnie Wood was the last addition to the band. This creates the final line-up today of Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Ronnie Wood and Charlie Watts. The Rolling Stones influenced America so much. They brought together so many types of music genres, and completely showed us a new side of rock and roll. Still today they are traveling around the world playing their music for so many people. Even after fifty years they just will not quit, they have established on of the most biggest fan bases out there.

Reflection Letter Essay
The purpose of this study is to show institutional structure differences and similarities between Elementary Montessori schools, Secondary Charter schools, and Higher Education Technical schools. To support this research background information will be provided for each educational structure listed. The study will also include targeted population, class sizes, and educational philosophies for each structure. Montessori School Montessori school was established over 100 years ago by Dr. Mary Montessori. The population Montessori schools focused was economically challenged elementary age students who were diagnosed with mental retardation. In the late 90s this particular school structure began to expand to middle and high school with intention to continue to serve their current student population. The availability of federal funding contributed an increasing boost to enrollment in Montessori schools. Montessori schools currently account for over 4,000 schools in the Unites States. Approximately 200-300 of the schools are classified in the public sector while the remainder is comparable to public schools. Settings in which Montessori schools are found include but at not limited to inner city, large magnet school areas, and areas where at-risk preschool students are placed. Lopata wrote that in the child-centered environment emphasis is placed on ââ¬Å"total developmentâ⬠of the child and his or her overall work procedure (Lopata, 2005). According to Lopata the stated goal of Montessori schools was development of strong self-directed young adults who pursue a lifetime love of independent learning (Lopata, 2005). This goal within itself is proven a tremendous difference between this school structure and any of the others. Montessori classroom design was created to accommodate students of multiple ages in one classroom with a need to meet the students were they are emotionally or behaviorally. The average educational institute focuses on academic gains and student achievement. The difference between Montessori schools and other schools is the physical environment. The classroom is not the traditional desks in rows or even the table groups. The desks are arranged in ââ¬Å"raftâ⬠so students can promote individual or small groups independently (Lopata, 2005). This option provides students with choices in how he or she wishes to learn. The set up also provides a different attitude when it comes to the classroom. Educational environments were traditional designed to be teacher centered, the teacher is the focal point, but Montessori schools are very supportive of ââ¬Å"student centeredâ⬠structure. Instructional methodology is the third difference found in Montessori schools. Montessori schools have their own specific curriculum written by Montessori persons. The curriculum does not permit the use of worksheets, grades, textbooks, or punishments or rewards for achieving academic success or failure. Students usually spend 3-4 hours in self-selected individual or small group work and less than an hour in whole group this practice is totally opposite of other educational structures (Lopata, 2005). Educators are trained to conduct a 15-20 minute lesson to introduce the lesson and students move into individual or small work groups. Lopata included some valued points of view in Montessori structure such as: students direct their own learning versus teachers being the authoritarians; student achievement is seen as a comparison versus competition, and human potential versus skill development (Lopata, 2005). Charter Schools In the state of Minnesota the first legislation was passed in 1991. There are approximately 5,000 charter schools in the United States of America, this equals to 2. 4 % of all. There are more than six states with over 200 charter schools. The laws vary greatly from state to state along such dimensions as the year of passage, number of schools allowed number and identity of chartering authorities, eligible charter applicants or sponsors, types of charter schools allowed (Lawton, 2009). Charter schools are public schools that must comply with most of the federal and state regulations that apply to traditional public schools (Lawton, 2009). Charter schools have the privilege to develop their own policies as it relates to discipline, personnel, and attendance, this autonomy awards Charter schools have what is referred to as ââ¬Å"zero toleranceâ⬠. Charter schools are choice schools that parents elect to send their children to this educational institute, the educational structures have a discipline plan in place but for major offences students are expelled and are encouraged to return to his or her home school. The demand for parental involvement was created to minimize behavior problems but some cases this does not deter the problem. Charter schools participate in gathering data from ââ¬Å"The National Assessment of Educational Attainment (NAEP). This data along with state mandated competency tests are used to drive the instruction in Charter schools. The success or lack there of is hard to determine due to techniques used to compare reliability of the tests vary from state to state. Charter schools receive the regular per student amount from the state, but to ensure that students have opportunities that may not be available in traditional schools their board seek outside financial support heavily from community partners and other funding sources such as grants and private investors. Lawton wrote, factors that positively impact a charter school whose mission is to address the needs of at-risk populations may very well differ from those that benefit a charter school whose mission includes strong but narrow academic focus (Lawton, 2009). Some districts are seeing a rise in charter schools with over 80% having a academic focus such as: MAHS in Memphis, TN that has a focus on health and science, Memphis Business Academy (both elementary and high) that have a business focus in Memphis, TN, and Mountain Education Center in Blairsville, GA that provide evening schools for students seeking a regular Georgia Diploma but the traditional setting is not accommodating. Each environment has approximately 1:20 student teacher ratio. Technical Schools Artifacts found to support this research combined vocational and technical education in the post secondary structure. The growing need for technical positions Mupinga and Livesay referenced technical and medical field positons as the highest paid fields therefore the need to attend four year colleges will become obsolete. The researcher found this statement interesting because most educational structures both public and private goal is preparation for college. Vocational-Technical schools provide courses related directly to the program of study. Traditional programs will not always provide content specific needed to compete in occupations that they are preparing for. A few occupations found in vocational-technical schools are: auto mechanics, barber/beauticians, shoe repairs, child care, computer repair, and heating and air-conditioning. Proponents of a college preparatory structure for high school students have long sneered at vocational education (Mupinga & Livesay, 2004). The occupations listed above are important to the day to day life for many and four year colleges and universities are missing the mark in preparation for these careers. In the past technical work has been associated with blue-collar work is slowing dissipating in todayââ¬â¢s work force. Other occupations such as plumbers and construction workers are always in high demand and these are two of the many programs offered in vocational-technical programs. Mupinga and Livesay pointed out that despite the time spent in vocational-technical school or community colleges the course has been more rigorous and demanding that some traditional post secondary schools. The smaller classroom student-teacher ratio is nothing close to that of a four-year college or university when there can be as many as 200 students in a classroom. Vocational-Technical schools usually focus on three areas: service (barber, and cosmetology; 64%), health and life science (medical/dental assistants, medical office administrative staff; 61%), business and marketing (administrative assistant, bookkeeper; 60%). The programs general are 12 to 24 months with extensive hands-on practical experiences. The programs less than 24 months provide opportunity for the students to become certificated in his or her program of study. The students that complete a two year program can earn an Associateââ¬â¢s degree. Mupinga and Livesay wrote four-year institutes will often offer associate degrees in various fields, but rarely offer these career-oriented certificate programs. Vocational-technical schools have an advantage over traditional post-secondary schools because they provide satellite campuses. The convenience of the satellite campuses provide students opportunity to attend a campus that does not require him or her to travel or live in close proximity of the campus. The partnership that vocational-technical schools are building with local business is increasing to provide a job supply of students that graduate from the programs. Conclusion Education is similar to many other industries such as automobile sales, tooth paste ads, and real estate. Everyone advertise they have the best product and offer the service when in actuality the best is what meet your needs. The three different educational structures offered areas that were strengths to their environment like Montessori schools meeting students were they are while Charter schools traditionally offer smaller classrooms to provide more support to students, Vocational-technical schools provide career oriented opportunities that are not offered in traditional schools. The differences are environment as it relate to Montessori versus Charter schools. Montessori environment is carefree but Charter is more structured with a focus on curriculum. NCIS is one of the longest running scripted primetime shows. NCIS follows fictional agents from the Naval Criminal Investigative Service through dramatic cases that can range from drug dealing to treason. She is more like Agent Todd character through her artistic ability and wardrobe. After Season thirteen Agent Dinozzo resigned and his replacements are Agent Torres and Agent Quinn. Agent Nicholas Torres played by Wilmer Valderrama who was a deep undercover agent for NCIS before joining. He had a case in DC with Agent Gibbs and decided to stay in DC and work with Gibbs. This story describes a fictional small town which observesââ¬âas do many other communities, both large and small, throughout contemporary Americaââ¬âan annual ritual known as the lottery. Details of contemporary small-town American life are embroidered upon a description of an annual ritual known as the lottery. In a small village of about 300 residents, the locals are in an excited yet nervous mood on June 27. Children gather stones as the adult townsfolk assemble for their annual event, which in the local tradition is practiced to ensure a good harvest (Old Man Warner quotes an old proverb: Lottery in June, corn be heavy soon), though there are some rumors that nearby communities in the north are talking about giving up the lottery. The lottery preparations start the night before with Mr. Summers and Mr. Graves making the paper slips and the list of all the families. Once the slips are finished, they are put into a black box, which is stored overnight in a safe at the coal company. The story briefly mentions how the ballot box has been stored other years in various places in the town, which currently differ from the current lottery but with the same concept. Personal Statement On Pursuing Physical Therapy - 988 Words
With thousands of employment choices, choosing what you want to do for the rest of your life can be difficult. You have many aspects to think about while making this life changing decision. I plan on pursuing physical therapy, which is also known as PT, with a doctoral degree. The reason I chose this occupation is because I wanted to pursue something in the medical field. Considering we will forever need medical material, the medical field is a stable route to take. I then narrowed my broad choice to being a physical therapist because I find it immensely interesting. To be a physical therapist you must have many skills and abilities, such as reading comprehension, critical thinking, and active listening. When a patient comes to for help you must use logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions (occupation profile). You also have many responsibilities as a physical therapist, such as having the ability to tell when something is wrong, and being able to diagnose it with the correct exercises so the patient gets better. A PT designs tailored exercise and prevention programs, teaches patients how to perform them safely, and helps them regain movement and function. You also have a lot of responsibility with paperwork, by making sure everything is done correctly and with the proper insurance given by the patient. The Secret Circle The Power Chapter Eight Free Essays
Faye drew a circle on the road with the black-handled knife. Then she went around the circle with water sprinkled from a cup, then with a long stick of incense, then with a lighted candle. They filed into the circle through a gap which faced northeast, and sat down around the inner perimeter. It was strange to see only the faces of girls around the circle, Cassie thought. ââ¬Å"Do you want to explain or shall I?â⬠Diana asked Faye, her hand on the white bag. There was still something inside it. ââ¬Å"Oh, you can explainâ⬠Faye said negligently. ââ¬Å"All right. We each take a candle, you see, and light it, and put it in a circle in the middle. And we each say a word, naming one of the aspects of womanhood. Not the stages, you know, like maiden, mother, and crone, but a quality. A ââ¬â ââ¬Å" ââ¬Å"Virtue,â⬠Melanie helped her out. ââ¬Å"Right. A virtue. Something that women have. Then, when we get all of them together, we show the candles to the elements and get their blessing. Itââ¬â¢s an affirmation of what we girls are, sort of; a celebration.â⬠ââ¬Å"I think thatââ¬â¢s lovely,â⬠Cassie said softly. ââ¬Å"All right; letââ¬â¢s do it. Who wants red, or do I need to ask?â⬠Diana took a red candle out of the bag. Very faintly, Cassie thought she caught the warm, spicy scent of cinnamon. ââ¬Å"Me. Iââ¬â¢m red,â⬠Faye said. She turned the candle over in her hands, examining its smooth waxiness. She held it upright and cupped a hand swiftly around the wick. Cassie saw the flame spring into being, shining through Fayeââ¬â¢s fingers so they looked like pink shells, turning Fayeââ¬â¢s long red nails into jewels. Diana, who had been holding a pack of matches toward Faye, put them down. ââ¬Å"Passion,â⬠Faye said throatily, smiling her old, slow smile around the group as she dripped wax on the road and stuck the candle in it. ââ¬Å"Is that a virtue?â⬠Melanie asked skeptically. Faye raised an eyebrow. ââ¬Å"Itââ¬â¢s an aspect of womanhood. Itââ¬â¢s the one I want to celebrate.â⬠ââ¬Å"Let her have it,â⬠Laurel said. ââ¬Å"Passionââ¬â¢s okay.â⬠The red candle burned like a star. ââ¬Å"Next comes orange,â⬠said Diana. ââ¬Å"Who wants that?â⬠ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢ll take it,â⬠Suzan said. The orange candle was close to the titian of Suzanââ¬â¢s own hair. Suzan sniffed at it. ââ¬Å"Peaches,â⬠she said, and Cassie could smell the sweet, voluptuous fragrance from where she sat. ââ¬Å"All right: beauty,â⬠Suzan said. She lit her candle in the conventional manner, with a match. ââ¬Å"Beauty definitely isnââ¬â¢t ââ¬â ââ¬Å" ââ¬Å"Well, itââ¬â¢s not a virtue, but itââ¬â¢s something women have,â⬠Cassie argued. Melanie rolled her eyes. Suzan stuck the orange candle in its own wax on the road, beside the red one. ââ¬Å"Here, let me go next. I know how to do this,â⬠Deborah said. She snatched up the white sack and rummaged in it, coming out with a yellow candle. ââ¬Å"Matches,â⬠she said commandingly to Suzan, who put them in her outstretched palm. Deborah lit the yellow candle. ââ¬Å"Courage,â⬠she said, clearly and distinctly, tilting the candle so a transparent stream of yellow wax ran onto the road. Cassie smelled a clean lemony sharpness and thought that it smelled like Deborah, like courage. The flame of the yellow candle lit Deborahââ¬â¢s dark hair and flickered madly off her leather jacket as it burned by the other two. ââ¬Å"Okay, green,â⬠Diana said, retrieving the bag. ââ¬Å"Me,â⬠said Melanie, and took the dark green candle. She was sitting right beside Cassie and Cassie leaned in to smell the wax when Melanie did. It was scented with something woodsy: pine, Cassie decided. Like a Christmas tree. ââ¬Å"Wisdom,â⬠said Melanie, her cool gray eyes steady as she lit the wick. She breathed in the scent for a moment, then placed the green candle on the road. The four burning candles formed a semicircle. ââ¬Å"Now blue,â⬠said Diana. Cassie felt a jolt of nervousness and excitement. Blue was her favorite color, and she wanted it, but she wasnââ¬â¢t quite sure she ought to speak out. Still, Diana and Laurel werenââ¬â¢t saying anything, and she remembered that Laurel liked amethysts and often wore purple. Cassie cleared her throat. ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢ll take it,â⬠she said, and reached for the pale blue candle Diana offered. She was very pleased to have it, to represent blue in the covenââ¬â¢s rainbow ââ¬â but she hadnââ¬â¢t thought of anything to say. Whatââ¬â¢s blue like? she asked herself, sniffing at the candle to gain time. What virtue do girls have that I want to celebrate? She couldnââ¬â¢t quite identify the scent, which was sweet but sharp. ââ¬Å"Itââ¬â¢s bayberry,â⬠Melanie told her, as Cassie kept sniffing. ââ¬Å"A smell with a history. The colonists all used to make bayberry candles.â⬠ââ¬Å"Oh.â⬠Maybe that was why it smelled familiar. Maybe her grandmother had burned bayberry candles ââ¬â her grandmother had done a lot of old-fashioned things. Cassie knew what virtue she wanted to celebrate now. ââ¬Å"Inspiration,â⬠she said. ââ¬Å"Thatââ¬â¢s imagination ââ¬â or like the flash of an idea, you know. When my grandmother was helping make my muse outfit for Halloween, she said thatââ¬â¢s what the muses were for: They gave people inspiration, the ability to think of new things, to have brilliant ideas. And they were female, the muses.â⬠Cassie hadnââ¬â¢t meant to make a speech, and she looked down, embarrassed. I didnââ¬â¢t get the matches, she realized ââ¬â and then she had an inspiration. Cupping her hand around the candlewick as Faye had, she concentrated hard, thinking of fire, bright leaping fire ââ¬â then she pushed with her mind, the way she had with the doberman and with Sean. She felt the power leave her like a blast of heat and focus on the wick and suddenly a flame shot up, so high that she had to jerk her hand away to keep from getting burned. ââ¬Å"An idea ââ¬â just like that,â⬠she said, a little shaken, and she dripped wax on the road to stick the blue candle in. The other girls were looking at her wide-eyed, except Faye, whose eyes were narrow and hooded. Deborah grinned. ââ¬Å"I guess weââ¬â¢ve got more than one fire-handler around here,â⬠she said. Faye looked even less amused. ââ¬Å"Ah ââ¬â purple,â⬠Diana said, giving herself a little shake and taking a lavender candle from the bag. ââ¬Å"Thatââ¬â¢s me. How did you do that, Cassie? All right; Iââ¬â¢m going on with the ceremony. I just wanted to know,â⬠Laurel said. She looked at her candle. ââ¬Å"I donââ¬â¢t know how to get mine into one word,â⬠she said. ââ¬Å"I wanted to do environmental awareness ââ¬â sort of like, connectedness to all things. Weââ¬â¢re a part of the earth and we should care about all the other things that live here with us.â⬠ââ¬Å"What about ââ¬Ëcompassionââ¬â¢?â⬠Melanie said quietly. ââ¬Å"That would cover it, I think.â⬠ââ¬Å"Thatââ¬â¢s good; compassion.â⬠Laurel lit the purple candle. ââ¬Å"Whatââ¬â¢s it smell like?â⬠Suzan whispered as Laurel stuck the candle in the road between Cassieââ¬â¢s blue candle and Fayeââ¬â¢s red one, completing the rainbow circle. ââ¬Å"Itââ¬â¢s sweet and floral; I think itââ¬â¢s supposed to be hyacinth,â⬠Laurel whispered back. ââ¬Å"Wait,â⬠Cassie said. ââ¬Å"If it goes there, what about Diana? Donââ¬â¢t you get a candle, Diana?â⬠She felt jealous on Dianaââ¬â¢s behalf, she wanted the blond girl to have a turn too. ââ¬Å"Yes: white goes in the middle, and Iââ¬â¢m the only one left to do it.â⬠And itââ¬â¢s perfect, Cassie thought, watching Diana take out the vanilla-scented white candle and hold it up. Diana represented white as surely as Faye did red. It showed in the virtue Diana named, too. ââ¬Å"Purity,â⬠she said simply, lighting the white candle with a match and reaching into the circle of candles to place it in the center. Anybody else would have sounded ridiculous saying it, but Diana looked like the embodiment of purity sitting there, her beautiful face lit by the candles, her silky straight hair of that impossible color falling down her back. Her expression was serious and unself-conscious. When Diana said purity she meant purity, and not even Faye dared to snicker. The circle of candles was pretty; seven tongues of flame leaping and dancing in the night air; seven scents mingling into one delicious composite fragrance. Eddies in the breeze seemed to bring the smell of cinnamon to Cassie, then a whiff of pine, then the sharpness of lemon. ââ¬Å"Passion, beauty, courage, wisdom, inspiration, compassion, and purity,â⬠Laurel ticked off, pointing to the candles that represented each. ââ¬Å"Let us all . . .â⬠Diana prompted, nudging Faye. ââ¬Å"Let us all have all of them,â⬠Faye said. ââ¬Å"Earth, Water, Fire, Air, witness. Not that we donââ¬â¢t have them already,â⬠she added, regarding the glowing circle with a satisfied smile. Laurelââ¬â¢s eyes twinkled at Cassie from across the flames and Cassie let her own eyes twinkle back. ââ¬Å"Well, anyway, we have all of them if you count all of us,â⬠Deborah said, and grinned. Diana smiled her gentle smile. For a moment, all the girls were smiling at each other over the candles, and Cassie felt as if they were a part of . something bigger. Each of them contributed something important, and together they were more than just the sum of the parts. ââ¬Å"Now weââ¬â¢re supposed to let them burn all night,â⬠Melanie said, nodding at the candles. ââ¬Å"What if somebody runs them over?â⬠Suzan asked pragmatically. ââ¬Å"Well, I guess if we donââ¬â¢t see it, it doesnââ¬â¢t matter,â⬠Diana said. ââ¬Å"Wait, though, thereââ¬â¢s something else I wanted to do. Itââ¬â¢s not part of the night of Hecate, but itââ¬â¢s another Greek thing, the Arretophoria. It means the trust festival.â⬠She reached into the white bag again. ââ¬Å"The Greek priestesses of Athena used to do this. Itââ¬â¢s where one of the older members of the group ââ¬â thatââ¬â¢s me ââ¬â gives a box to the youngest member ââ¬â thatââ¬â¢s you, Cassie. You have to go bury the box somewhere without looking at whatââ¬â¢s inside it. Itââ¬â¢s supposed to be a dark and perilous journey you go on, but I think Nickââ¬â¢s right and youââ¬â¢d better stick around here. Just take it off the road somewhere and bury it.â⬠ââ¬Å"And thatââ¬â¢s all?â⬠Cassie looked at the box Diana had given her. It was made of some light-colored wood, carved all over with tiny, intricate figures: bees and bears and fish. Something inside it rattled. ââ¬Å"I just bury it?â⬠ââ¬Å"Thatââ¬â¢s all,â⬠Diana said, handing Cassie the last item from the white bag: a small trowel. ââ¬Å"The point is that you donââ¬â¢t look inside it. Thatââ¬â¢s why itââ¬â¢s called the trust festival; itââ¬â¢s a celebration of trust and responsibility and friendship. Someday later weââ¬â¢ll come back and dig it up.â⬠ââ¬Å"Okay.â⬠Carrying the box and trowel, Cassie stepped outside the circle and walked away from the group, leaving the little dancing points, of flame behind. She didnââ¬â¢t want to bury the box close to the road. For one thing, the soil was hard and strewn with gravel; it wouldnââ¬â¢t be easy to dig here; sheââ¬â¢d just be scratching at the surface. Besides, this close someone might see the ground had been disturbed and dig the box up before its time. Cassie kept walking east. She could hear the whispering of the sea from that direction and feel a faint, salty breeze. She climbed over some large rocks, and the beach stretched out before her, deserted and somehow eerie. Lacy white waves were lapping quietly at the shore. A yellow moon, just over half full, was rising above the ocean. The mourning moon, Cassie remembered. It was just the color of Fayeââ¬â¢s eyes. In fact, it looked like a jaundiced, ancient eye, and Cassie had the uncomfortable sense of being spied on as she stuck the trowel into the cold dry sand and began to dig. That was deep enough. The sand scooped out by the trowel was caked now, and she hoped the moisture wouldnââ¬â¢t ruin Dianaââ¬â¢s box. As Cassie put the wooden box in the hole, moonlight glinted off the brass hasp. It wasnââ¬â¢t locked. For just an instant, she had the temptation to open it. Donââ¬â¢t be stupid, she told herself. After all you and Diana have been through, if you canââ¬â¢t do a little thing like bury a box without looking insideâ⬠¦ Nobody would know, the voice in her mind countered defensively. I would know, Cassie told the voice. So there. She dumped sand on the box decisively, scooping with both the trowel and her hand to cover it faster. It was sometime while she was covering the box that she noticed the blackness. Itââ¬â¢s just a shadow, she thought. The moon was high enough now to throw a long shadow behind an outcrop of rock which was closer to the water than Cassie. Cassie watched it out of the corner of her eye as she smoothed the sand over the buried box. There, now youââ¬â¢d never know anything was hidden here. The shadow was stretching closer, but that was just because the moon was rising . . . Wrong, Cassie thought. She stopped in the middle of brushing sand off her hands and looked at it. Shadows get shorter as the moon gets higher. Just like the sun, she thought. But this one was definitely closer to her. The whispering of the ocean was suddenly loud. I should have listened to Diana. I should have stayed near the group, Cassie thought. Slowly and casually, she glanced over her shoulder. The rocks sheââ¬â¢d climbed over seemed far away, and there was no sign of the circle of candles behind them. No sound either, except the waves. Cassie felt exposed and very much alone. Donââ¬â¢t act scared. Get up and go, she told herself. Her heart was knocking against her ribs. As she stood, the shadow moved. Oh God. There was no way to pretend that was normal. The shadow wasnââ¬â¢t even attached to the rock anymore. It was just a blackness on the sand, flowing like water, moving toward her. It was alive. Go, go! Cassieââ¬â¢s mind screamed at her. But her legs wouldnââ¬â¢t obey. They were locked, paralyzed. She wasnââ¬â¢t going anywhere. Cassssie. Her head jerked up; she looked for the person who had spoken. But it wasnââ¬â¢t a person. It was the waves. Cassssssie. I want to get out of here, Cassie thought. Her legs still wouldnââ¬â¢t move. The blackness flowed like tar, rippling toward her. It divided, pouring itself on either side of her, encircling her. Cassssssie. The shadow was whispering to her with Black Johnââ¬â¢s voice. It eddied around her, a formless darkness like smoke. As she looked down at it, Cassie seemed to see snakes in it, and black beetles, all crawling loathsome things. It was around her, but it didnââ¬â¢t want to kill her. It wanted to get into her mind. She could feel it trying. A pressure as it swirled around her feet. All she could think was, thank God I donââ¬â¢t still have the hematite. I should have listened; why didnââ¬â¢t I listen? she thought then. The girls wouldnââ¬â¢t miss her for a while. Too long. She wanted to scream, but her throat was as paralyzed as her legs. She could only stand there and watch the rippling blackness swirl around her feet. Push with your mind, she thought, but she was too frightened. She couldnââ¬â¢t scare away this darkness the way she had the doberman. She wasnââ¬â¢t strong enough. Please help me, she thought. And then, in a rush, it was all she was thinking. Oh please somebody help me, somebody please come, I canââ¬â¢t get out of this myself, oh please somebody ââ¬â Cassssssie, the whisper came. The waves and the darkness and the watching moon all seemed to be saying it. Help me â⬠¦ ââ¬Å"Cassie!â⬠It was a shout, not a whisper, and behind it Cassie heard a dog barking. At the sound, Cassieââ¬â¢s mind was flooded with images of safety, of comfort. She looked around frantically. Her legs still wouldnââ¬â¢t move. ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢m here!â⬠she shouted back. Even as she called, she felt herself released. The black was edging away, retreating to the rock. Merging with the real shadow there. ââ¬Å"Cassie!â⬠The voice was familiar, loved. ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢m here,â⬠Cassie called again, stumbling toward it. The visions of comfort and safety and closeness were still whirling inside her, pulling her. She followed them. Just as she reached the rocks, strong arms caught her up, held her tightly. She felt the warmth of a human body against her. Over Nickââ¬â¢s shoulder, she met Adamââ¬â¢s eyes. The moon was shining full in his face, turning those eyes odd colors, blue-violet like the bottom of a flame. Like the sky before some strange storm. She thought she could see silver reflecting in his pupils. Raj bounded up beside him, still barking. The German shepherdââ¬â¢s tail was waving frantically as he headed for Cassie. Adam caught him by the ruff and held him back. ââ¬Å"Are you okay? Are you hurt?â⬠Nick said in her ear. ââ¬Å"No. Iââ¬â¢m all right,â⬠she whispered. She didnââ¬â¢t know what she was saying. ââ¬Å"You shouldnââ¬â¢t have gone off by yourself,â⬠Nick said angrily. ââ¬Å"They shouldnââ¬â¢t have let you do it.â⬠ââ¬Å"Itââ¬â¢s okay, Nick.â⬠She hung on to him with all her strength and buried her face in his shoulder just as Adam turned, leading the reluctant Raj away. Then she clung there, knowing he could feel her shaking. ââ¬Å"Cassie.â⬠He stroked her back soothingly. Cassie pulled back slightly. Adam was gone. She looked at Nick in the moonlight, at the clean carven handsomeness of his features with their hint of coldness. Except his eyes werenââ¬â¢t cold now. Passion, she thought and brought up Fayeââ¬â¢s red candle in her mind. Then she kissed him. Sheââ¬â¢d never really kissed anybody besides Adam, but she guessed she knew how to do it well enough. Nickââ¬â¢s mouth was warm, and that was nice. She felt how startled he was, and then instantly felt the surprise swept away by something deeper, sweeter. She felt him kissing her back. She kissed not to think. Kissing was good for that. Suzan had been dead wrong about Nick. He wasnââ¬â¢t an iguana. Little lines of fire ran along Cassieââ¬â¢s nerves, tingling her fingers. She felt warm all over. Eventually, they both broke it. Cassie looked up at him, her fingers still intermeshed with his. ââ¬Å"Sorry,â⬠she said unsteadily. ââ¬Å"I was just scared.â⬠ââ¬Å"Remind me to get you scared frequently,â⬠Nick said. He looked slightly dazed. ââ¬Å"Weââ¬â¢d better go back. Black John was here.â⬠She had to give Nick credit; he didnââ¬â¢t yell ââ¬Å"What?â⬠and shake her. He cast a quick, hunting look around, switching his grip on her so that he was holding her arm with his left hand and his right hand was free. ââ¬Å"Heââ¬â¢s gone now,â⬠she said. ââ¬Å"There was a shadow that came out from that rock, but itââ¬â¢s not there anymore.â⬠ââ¬Å"After this, nobody goes out alone,â⬠Nick said, guiding her toward the rocks they had to climb to get back to the crossroads. ââ¬Å"I think he was trying to get into my mind,â⬠Cassie told the others when they were all back at Adamââ¬â¢s house again. Nursing as a profession The authority for the practice of nursing is based upon a social contract that delineates professional rights and responsibilities as well as mechanisms for public accountability. In almost all countries, nursing practice is defined and governed by law, and entrance to the profession is regulated at the national or state level. The aim of the nursing community worldwide is for its professionals to ensure quality care for all, while maintaining their credentials, code of ethics, standards, and competencies, and continuing their education. 21] There are a number of educational paths to becoming a professional nurse, which vary greatly worldwide, but all involve extensive study of nursing theory and practice, and training in clinical skills. Nurses care for individuals of all ages and cultural backgrounds who are healthy and ill in a holistic manner based on the individuals physical, emotional, psychological, intellectual, social, and spiritual needs. The profession combines physical science, social science, nursing theory, and technology in caring for those individuals. In order to work in the nursing profession, all nurses hold one or more credentials depending on their scope of practice and education. ALicensed practical nurse (LPN) (also referred to as a Licensed vocational nurse, Registered practical nurse, Enrolled nurse, and State enrolled nurse) works independently or with a Registered nurse. The most significant differentiation between an LPN and RN is found in the requirements for entry to practice, which determines entitlement for their scope of practice, for example in Canada an RN requires a bachelors degree and a LPN requires a 2 year diploma. A Registered nurse (RN) provides scientific, psychological, and technological knowledge in the care of patients and families in many health care settings. Registered nurses may also earn additional credentials ordegrees. In the USA, in addition to the LPN, Registered nurses can earn 2 different degrees that qualify a nurse for the title RN. The title RN ADN is awarded to the nurse who has completed a 2 year undergraduate academic degree awarded by community colleges, junior colleges, technical colleges, and bachelors degree-granting colleges and universities upon completion of a course of study usually lasting two years. The title RN BSN is awarded to the nurse who has earned an American four year academic degree in the science and principles of nursing, granted by a tertiary education university or similarly accredited school. After completing either the LPN or either RN education programs in the USA, graduates are eligible to sit for the a licensing examination to become a nurse, the passing of which is required for the nursing license. RNs may also pursue different roles as advanced practice registered nurses. Nurses may follow their personal and professional interests by working with any group of people, in any setting, at any time. Some nurses follow the traditional role of working in a hospital setting. Around the world, nurses have been traditionally female. Despite equal opportunity legislation nursing has continued to be a female dominated profession. [25] For instance, in Canada and America the male-to-female ratio of nurses is approximately 1:19. 26][27] This ratio is represented around the world. Notable exceptions include: Francophone Africa, which includes the countries of Benin, Burkina Faso,Cameroon, Chad, Congo, Ivory Coast, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Djibouti, Guinea, Gabon, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Rwanda,Senegal, and Togo, which all have more male than female nurses. In Europe, in countries such as Spain, Portugal, Czechoslovakia, and Italy, over 20% of nurses are male. 28] Although nursing practice varies both through its various specialties and countries, these nursing organizations offer the following definitions: Nursing encompasses autonomous and collaborative care of individuals of all ages, families, groups and communities, sick or well and in all settings. Nursing includes the promotion of health, prevention of illness, and the care of ill, disabled and dying people. Advocacy, promotion of a safe environment, research, participation in shaping health policy and in patient and health systems management, and education are also key nursing roles.
